Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has extended the retirement age of Magistrates in the state from 60 to 65 years.
The governor also increased the membership of the state’s oil and gas Commission with the objective of improving governance, representation, and operational efficiency.
Two bills giving legal backing to these actions were signed into law on Wednesday by the governor.
A statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, said the signing into law of these two significant bills marked a new phase in the state’s Judiciary and oil sector governance.
While stating that this legislative move aimed at enhancing the efficiency and experience of the judiciary by allowing seasoned magistrates to serve longer, thereby improving the administration of justice in the state, Governor Okpebholo said increasing the membership of the oil and gas Commission would ensure better management of the state’s oil resources and foster economic growth.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions that drive justice and economic development.
Governor Okpebholo noted that these legislative actions align with the state’s vision of enhancing judicial integrity and optimising the benefits of its natural resources for the people of Edo State.
The newly-signed bills are expected to take immediate effect, with relevant stakeholders expressing optimism about their potential impacts on governance and service delivery in the state.
