Edo author, by the pen name Ilenloa Igberaese and official name, Dr. Francis Ilenloa Igberaese, has released his new and 9th book, under the simple title: ‘ EMATON ‘. It is indeed, a thriller and a fantasy.
A mixed fiction, the book is with the central objective of critically analysing the September 21st 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State, so that people will know what really happened. It is also flavoured with other contemporary issues and very interesting traditional or cultural fables, proverbs and parables.
The author was pointblank, insisting that the ex-governor’s ematon style of politics was evil personified, with core elements of betrayal, ingratitude, unhealthy rivalry, blackmail, wickedness and brutality, such that are associated with the ruthless profiteers groomed in the private sector.
It explains why even an angel could not have won election under his leadership and how the ex-governor is the most mendacious and malevolent godfather in the history of Edo State. It gives the reason it was even possible for Ighodaro to get that much votes.
It reveals how Ighodalo was so unlucky to have passed through the road at the time Edo gradiators were desperately looking for a thief, and how the ex-governor’s infamous rife with the palace shaped the preference of the average Benin person.
It narrates why and how at the end, the ex-governor reconciled all his enemies and rivals against his interest, and to prevent a semblance of the him. He then ate the food prepared for him by the whole village, and how this paved the way for the man they call Akpakomiza, who appeared to have been destined for it.
Brief Chat with the Author
‘ I really would not join issues with those who believe the election was rigged by INEC in favour of Sen. Okpebholo but I object. All I can tell them is that it is the same thing that the madness was caused by the cloth the ex-governor had picked from the evil shrine. Everything happened that God may show that He alone can elect the weak in order to shame the strong ‘, the author said.
On why he did not write pure fiction and satire like his other books, the author said:
You see, as you have observed, I have been writing fictions and satires. I have written eight before this book. As I prepared for the public presentation of the book I titled “… Under A Sick President” in 2023, a book I wrote to depict the clueless and bad governance of Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, I went to Lagos to look for Dele Farotimi (shows pictures)
Instead of suffering me to be looking for him all around Lagos, Farotimi came to my hotel at Lekki and even bought me a bottle of beer at the hotel bar; nice guy. As I gave him a copy of the book and explained the idea behind it to him, he didn’t mince words in telling me his reservations about the book. One of such reservations was my writing fiction when indeed I believed in what I wrote and meant it. He wondered whether I was afraid or something or not that I was not man enough to be pointblank and let people know what I wrote about. He told me that if I had thought that fear will help me escape the ruthlessness of the oppressors, the same fear will ruin my successes. I immediately agreed with him and wished I could rewrite that book. At that time, I never knew that he was writing any book. When his book finally came out, I understood him better. I however decided that I should go mid-way, writing mixed fictions instead of the pure fictions I have been writing. That way, I would be able to say my mind on contemporary issues, as well as utilise my village upbringing to bring some of those proverbs and parables you see in the book to limelight. They are the parts I always cherish most in my books. I am a typical village boy from Esan. I remain a rustic
The author appealed to Edo people and readers not to accuse him of anything until they read the book. He said that he made the book an easy read by highlighting every chapter before going into details.
He also appealed to anybody who may be offended by his writing to take it easy with him as he welcomed criticisms from readers. He debunked the assertion that he wrote to attract the attention of Gov. Okpebholo but for prosterity.
‘ For what anyway? I am a Lecturer and a University Don for that matter. What possibly would I be looking for that would warrant the stress of writing a book? If I need the governor’s attention so badly, I would be in the sitting rooms of all the rich and influential men in town, some of who belong to the same clubs, not on the my writing desk, having sleepless nights. Moreover, you should not forget that I was Chief Anenih’s boy for more than two decades.
He reminded his critics that he is a thoroughly groomed Economist from the University of Benin, obtaining four degrees, including a Ph.D. in the discipline, and that he is the Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Society in the state who should be more useful to the government than the government would be useful to him. So that there is no need going through both the emotional and financial stress of writing a book to seek anybody’s attention?’.
When pressed on his readiness to serve should the governor appoints him, he refused to be forthcoming but that he would carefully evaluate the situation.
