The death has been announced in Benin City of a veteran Sports Journalist, Prince Victor Osatohamwen Ewaka at the age of 78.

In a statement signed by Prince Courage Eweka on behalf of the family and made available to newsmen in Benin City, said Prince Eweka died on Friday 14th June, 2024, adding that burial ceremony for the late veteran journalist will commence on 1st August, 2024.

Prince Victor Osatohanmwen  Eweka was born into the Benin Royal family on the 8th of February, 1946 in Benin City, in present day Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.  His father, the late Prince Edison Basimi Eweka, was an environmental expert and his mother, Dora Uwaifo was a trader.

He had his early primary education at the Holy Trinity School, Onitsha and later moved back to Benin and attended Western Boys High School. He graduated from Western Boys High School in 1966.

He started his working career with the Nigerian Prison Service and later moved to work in Guinness Nigeria Ltd. where he worked for a few years. He later got an employment at The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Benin, after his graduation from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism in 1976. He started as a news reporter, immediately. Upon completion of studies and graduation from the Television College, Jos in 1983, he was moved to the sports desk, where he began anchoring sports programmes and events for the station. He rose to become the sports editor/ producer and equally a senior reporter in the sports desk and later became an Assistant Manager, News, in the Editorial department of the NTA, Benin.

A straight forward person who was always dedicated to his duties and work, was a member of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN) and also a member of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, (NUJ).

He retired from active service in 2006 and became a freelance media consultant on news and sports related matters.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Eweka, 4 Children and  2 Grandchildren.
