The Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council, Hon. Newman Ugiagbe, has dismissed reports of his alleged impeachment, describing it as “a distraction, illegal, and of no consequence.”

Ugiagbe accused those behind the purported impeachment of attempting to gain unauthorised access to the council’s treasury.

Reacting to the rumours, Ugiagbe said the individuals behind the move were not members of the Orhionmwon legislative arm.

Reports suggest that the alleged impeachment was orchestrated by two of the twelve councillors, who allegedly involved unidentified security personnel in the process.

The controversy arises amidst ongoing tensions between local government councils in Edo State and Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The governor had suspended all 18 council chairmen in the state for two months following accusations of gross misconduct and insubordination. The Edo State House of Assembly supported this action on 17 December.

However, the suspension has been widely criticised. The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, labelled the move illegal, referencing a Supreme Court judgment in July that granted autonomy to local governments nationwide. Despite this, the state government has reportedly taken further steps to impeach some council chairmen and allegedly deployed thugs to prevent suspended officials from accessing their offices.

Through his Chief Press Secretary, Roy Osariemen, Ugiagbe reaffirmed his position, stating, “My purported impeachment as Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council is null and void.

“Ten out of twelve councillors had earlier impeached the former leader, who is now illegally claiming to be Acting Chairman.

“This is a scheme by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to gain access to the council’s treasury, which we will oppose through legal avenues.”

Ugiagbe reiterated his commitment to serving the people of Orhionmwon, emphasising his dedication to good governance during his 16 months in office. He called on the public to condemn what he described as harassment, intimidation, and illegal actions orchestrated by the APC.

“We remain steadfast in our resolve to collaborate with other tiers of government to advance development in our local government area,” he added.
