A Mobile Court sitting in Benin City, the Edo State capital, has sentenced a commercial bus driver in the metropolis, Tobore Emurerhi to four days of community service for violating the state’s traffic laws.

The Nissan Vanette Bus driver with vehicle registration number BEN 34 XE also bagged a N50,000 fine.

Emurerhi is among drivers apprehended by the Edo State Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) for driving against the traffic (one-way). The arrest and prosecution are a part of renewed efforts by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to restore sanity and order on roads in the Benin metropolis.

The commercial bus driver who pleaded guilty to the charges was fined N50,000 and sentenced to four days of community service to clear the drainage at Third Junction, Benin City, for two hours daily.

The Edo State PUWOV Coordinator, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, while addressing journalists in Benin City, said the government remains committed to restoring sanity and order on roads within the Benin metropolis and will sustain the campaign against traffic violators in the state, ensuring that that all erring drivers are arrested and duly prosecuted.

Describing as worrisome the frequent disregard of traffic rules and regulations by motorists in the state, the PUWOV Coordinator noted, “While the government steps up efforts to ensure the free flow of traffic and ensure safety on our roads, we call on all motorists, including commercial bus drivers and private car owners to desist henceforth from flouting the state’s traffic laws and driving against traffic (one-way).

“We also solicit for the collaboration of all road users and motorists in the state and urge them to report drivers who flout traffic laws and drive against the traffic (one-way). Members of the public can record motorists disregarding traffic regulations on our roads and send a video of the recording to the WhatsApp Number: 08132030846.”
