Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, has insisted that, if everything that People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stand for in terms of unifying the country, in term of restructure the Nigeria, in terms of looking towards the government of national unity, that must be reflected in the party moving towards the elections.
Makinde made this call at the South-West PDP stakeholders meeting with the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
The Oyo State Governor, together with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has been tackling the PDP over the National Chairman of the party and the presidential candidate who are from the North.
Governor Seyi Makinde, has called for the resignation of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, for the people of the South to feel a sense of belonging in the party.
However, in his welcome address, he described Atiku as “the incoming President of Nigeria in 2023.”
Makinde’s description of Atiku elicited a loud applause from the PDP stakeholders at the venue of the meeting.
He said, “The truth is that we do not have any issue either with our party or our candidate. If there are challenges they must be tabled.
“We are supposed to give hope to our people, we want them to listen to us.
“Our party wants to rescue Nigeria and our candidate is a unifier. He wants to restructure Nigeria.
“Eight years of the All Progressives Congress have left us sharply divided. The issue is we must practice what we preach. If we want to unify Nigeria, we must unify the PDP first.
“If we want to restructure Nigeria, we must have the willingness to bring inclusivity to the PDP. Do we have the capacity? The answer is resounding yes.
“The message from the South-West PDP is the South-West is asking that the National Working Committee of the PDP should be restructured.
“We are asking the National Chairman to step down so that the South will be fully included. That is the message.”
Going further, Governor Seyi Makinde said, “Your Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of our party, PDP, the message from the South-West region is that, there are few things that you can do for us post-election. Once the election is won, there are things for you that you can do for us.
“But before the election, the South-West PDP want a situation where your message to Nigeria can resonate and the only that can happen is, if the face of PDP, if everything that PDP stand for in terms of unifying the country, in term of restructure the Nigeria, in terms of looking towards the government of ntional unity, that must be reflected in PDP moving towards the election.
“So, Your Excellency Sir, the South-West PDP is asking that the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP should be restructure such that what you have in the face of Nigeria right now, which is our candidate is from the North-East, the PDP National Chairman is from the North-Centre; what was floated few days back where they said that my brother, Governor Aminu Tambuwal is the Director-General (DG) of the campaign; he is from the North-West, maybe it has happened, may be not happened, but he has the quality and the capacity to be the DG of this campaign, there is no doubt about that, but we must resolved the issue for what we have in the face of Nigeria, by asking the National Chairman of our party, Iyorcha Ayu to step down so that the PDP in the southern part of the country will feel included in the top high ranking of our party, PDP.
“Everybody can kill the messenger if he so wish,” he concluded.
