The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Edo Specialist Hospital (ESH), Dr. (Mrs.) Anthonia Inibokun Njoku today disclosed that the increasing number of patients visiting the hospital has further underscored the need for expansion of the facility to accommodate more patients seeking quality care.
Njoku disclosed this to newsmen during a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council at the Union’s Secretariat, Oba Oguola Press Centre, GRA., Benin City.
Dr. Njoku who said the facility boasts of the state of the art facilities and services said the only challenge facing the Edo Specialist Hospital is bed space constraints for more patients seeking the services of the hospital and for admission cases.
She added that the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, had been supportive in the development of the hospital and has consistently committed resources to enable the hospital to thrive in providing quality care to the people.
According to him, “We have space constraints. I think one of the things in life is to grow. And because of that, it just speaks about the growth of the hospital. One of the key things is that this hospital is in the city centre and that makes everybody access it. And so because of that, there is a need for expansion.
“And also It be behooves on the services we offer. It is because it is a specialist hospital that offers different specialist care, a lot of persons that require specialist care come to our hospital.
“It goes to say that a lot more people are requiring these specialist services, and that is why we have that constraint.
“We have a lot of people being admitted. As a result, we will need to have a lot of expansion for these services to our patients.”
The CMD assured that the facility is expected to be in the nearest future a point of call for patients seeking medical care in the field of medicine like cardiothoracic surgeries and neurosurgeries, among others.
“We look forward to a day where we are able to do cardiothoracic surgeries and neurosurgeries because we have the potential to be able to do that.
“So, while we are offering those services, we are even going to need more spaces as well. So, that is the major reason,” Njoku added.
On his part, Edo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Festus Alenkhe urged the management team of the Edo Specialist Hospital to be committed in delivering quality and affordable health care services to the people.
