Edo State Ministry of Health Collaborates WHO, TCI, MSI To Mark International Condom Day With Awareness Rally

The Edo State Ministry of Health in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO), The Challenge Initiative (TCI), Nigeria Reproductive Choice (MSI), yesterday celebrated International Condom Day, a global event that promotes the use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and unplanned pregnancies.

To mark the day, the ministry organized a public awareness rally led by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole round Ring Road, Sapele road, Motor Parks and Markets, to educate residents on the importance of maintaining good sexual and reproductive health. During the event, male and female condoms, along with other educational materials were distributed.

Dr. Oshiomhole, emphasized that the day is not just about condom use but also about protection, responsibility, and the right to good health.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring that individuals have access to the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. He also encouraged the public to make responsible choices and support efforts to build a healthier future.

On her part, Dr. Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin, Permanent Secretary (PS), Hospital Management Agency, highlighted the significance of World Condom Day. She stressed the need to raise awareness about safe sex, family planning, and the importance of making responsible health choices.

The Director of Public Health, Dr. Stephenson Ojiefoh, and Edo State Primary Health Educator, Mrs. Irene Uwabor, also   noted that misconceptions about condom use persist in the society, with some associating it with promiscuity.

The duo explained that the initiative aims to educate the public on the primary purpose of condoms which is to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections.
