A Human Rights Activists Group  “Bail is Free Campaign Group”, has faulted a statement credited to a Benin based legal practitioner that “the law permits the police to collect administrative fees.”

The group who are dedicated to supporting the Federal Government of  Nigeria in promoting justice and fairness who also firmly believe that the Nigeria Police Force, as a key institution of law enforcement, must operate with integrity and transparency to effectively fulfill its mandate petitioned the Chairman, (Lion Bar), Nigeria Bar Association, Benin branch Edo State for clarification, verification and call to order of a lawyer who was identified by truecaller with phone number requesting legal assistance for Nigerian citizens in Edo State.

In the petition, a copy made available to newsmen in Benin, the group demand for proper investigation into such statement credited to a lawyer who supposed to uphold justice and protect citizens’ rights.

According to the group, “Section 1 of the Police Act 2020 outlines the General Objectives, which include accountability and transparency and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“If the police indeed required an administrative fee, why was no receipt issued for the N70,000 collected? We request that the lawyer who claimed that the police are permitted to collect administrative fees provide the specific legal provision supporting this claim.”

While requesting the contact information of any willing legal practitioners among members of NBA who can provide pro bono legal assistance to Nigerian citizens facing continued threats and human rights abuses from corrupt police officers engaged in these fraudulent activities, the group trust in the credibility and moral standing of the Nigeria Bar Association to review this matter critically and take necessary actions to uphold justice and defend citizens’ privileges.
