Private School Owners Laud Edo Govt For Prompt Response To Tax Concerns

The Coalition of Associations of Private Schools in Edo State (CAPS) has extended its profound appreciation to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebolo, Hon. Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Emmanuel Iyamu; and the Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), for their swift and responsive intervention regarding the recent arbitrary tax increment imposed on private schools in the state.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Osagie Erhunmwunse, State Controller Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), Dr. Lemmy Russell, State Chairman, National Association of Private Schools, (NAPPS), Dr. Abdulwasiu, State Leader, Association of Model Islamic Schools, (AMIS) and Dr. Christy Egbune, State chairman, Association of Private School Owners in Nigeria, (APSON), and made available to journalists, the group said they were particularly grateful for the listening ear and timely mediation of the Dr. Paddy Emmanuel Iyamu, whose support has led to a fair and considerate resolution in favour of members of their associations.
The statement reads in part:
“We acknowledge the following key outcomes with gratitude: Waiver of Tax Clearance for MBA and BECE Registration. The Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has graciously approved that private schools may proceed with the registration for the Middle Basic Assessment (MBA) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) without the prior requirement of tax clearance.
“Concession on Payment Terms: Members of our associations are now permitted to make a 10% of the already assessed tax liability while submitting financial expenses incurred to contest or seek a review of the assessments in order to be taxed on profit.
“Opportunity for Tax Assessment Review: The Government has further demonstrated fairness by allowing private schools the opportunity to challenge and seek a review of the substantial tax assessments. This reflects a commendable openness to dialogue and inclusive governance.
The coalition noted that this developments reaffirm the State Government’s commitment to educational growth, equitable taxation, and the promotion of a supportive environment for private educational institutions.
They commend the visionary leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, for demonstrating responsiveness, transparency, and strong commitment to the education sector. They also appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Education and the EIRS in addressing these pressing issues.
The Coalition reiterated their commitment in partnering with the Edo State Government to uphold educational standards and contribute meaningfully to the development of the State.
