As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for the forthcoming senatorial by-election primaries, this is a crucial moment for the party to reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals, party unity, and popular participation. It is a time to demonstrate that APC is not only a ruling party, but a party that truly practices the tenets of democracy—starting from within.

Let Internal Democracy Prevail

Internal democracy is the bedrock of any credible political organization. It ensures that the will of the party members, rather than the dictates of a few powerful individuals, determines the outcome of candidate selection. For the APC to retain the trust of its supporters and deepen its political roots across constituencies, it must allow an open, transparent, and competitive process in the upcoming primaries.

Imposition of candidates has, in the past, led to internal crises, voter apathy, defections, and even electoral losses. The electorate is becoming more politically aware and is demanding accountability, transparency, and fairness—not just from government, but from political parties themselves. APC must not ignore this tide of change.

A Test of Leadership and Legitimacy

This senatorial by-election is more than a routine contest—it is a test of APC’s readiness to evolve and align itself with the people’s aspirations. The leadership must resist the temptation to anoint or impose candidates. Instead, let every interested and qualified aspirant have a fair shot at the ticket. Let delegates and party members decide who is best suited to fly the party’s flag.

A transparent primary process will not only strengthen party cohesion but also boost the legitimacy of the eventual candidate. A candidate who emerges from a free and fair contest is more likely to garner widespread support, command loyalty from within the party structure, and face the general election with confidence and credibility.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of the Past

History has taught painful lessons—where imposition has led to mass protest votes, internal sabotage, and even the loss of strongholds to opposition parties. APC cannot afford to repeat those mistakes. The coming primary is an opportunity to heal old wounds, rebuild trust, and project a united front to the electorate.

Conclusion: Democracy Begins at Home

If APC is to continue presenting itself as the party of progress and the voice of the people, it must start by practicing what it preaches—democracy from within. Let the will of the people, not the preference of power-brokers, determine the party’s candidate. It is only through internal democracy that APC can consolidate its gains, win the hearts of Nigerians, and build a future anchored on justice, fairness, and popular will.

The time to act is now. Let there be no imposition. Let democracy lead.
