The Edo State Government has approved a series of transformative infrastructure projects across the state, including the construction of lecture theatres, student hostels, and markets, as well as the renovation of schools, in a bold move to strengthen education and boost economic activities.
The approvals were given during the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held at the Government House, Benin, and presided over by Governor Monday Okpebholo, who serves as Chairman of Council.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, disclosed that the Council approved three major building projects for Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma. These include the construction of a 1,500-seater lecture theatre, a twin 300-capacity lecture theatre, and a 600-bed hostel to address the accommodation needs of students.
According to Hon. Ohonbamu, “This is in fulfillment of the Governor’s promise to provide critical infrastructure for Ambrose Alli University. The facilities will not only ease the challenges of overcrowding in lecture halls but also improve the overall learning environment for students.”
Ohonbamu further revealed that EXCO approved the remodeling and reconstruction of eight secondary schools across Edo State, in addition to the commencement of Phase Three of the Basic Schools Renovation Programme. Benefiting local government areas include Ovia North-East, Ikpoba-Okha, Etsako West, Esan West, and Uhunmwonde, while contracts were also awarded for select dilapidated schools in Etsako East and Esan Central.
According to him, the Executive Council also endorsed several projects under the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOPADEC). These include the construction of four modern markets in Orhionmwon, Ikpoba-Okha, and Ovia North-East Local Government Areas, as well as the supply of 25 transformers to boost electrification in the oil-producing communities.
“In addition, EXCO has approved the construction of a modern market at the popular Jatu Market in Edo North. This project is aimed at strengthening commerce, expanding economic opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of the people,” Ohonbamu said.
On his part, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, emphasized the administration’s commitment to making quality education accessible to every Edo child.
“The government of Senator Monday Okpebholo is determined to equip Edo children with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in today’s society. This explains the administration’s focus on renovating and upgrading schools across the three senatorial districts,” Dr. Iyamu explained.
