The Edo State Police Command has disclosed the findings of an autopsy report over the death of twin babies who were referred to a private medical facility in the GRA axis of Benin, the State capital in August 2025.
Recall that The9jaTREND had on August 24 reported a couple mourned the death of their nine-day-old twin babies prompting a petition that has triggered police investigation into the incident at a private hospital in Edo State.
The Deputy Public Relations Officer of Edo Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem stated this when The9JaTREND sought an update on the command’s probe into the death of the babies.
She said the autopsy was conducted as part of an ongoing investigation.
“Yes, the autopsy has been completed and the results are out. I have discussed the findings with the Family Unit handling the case. The autopsy revealed that the babies died of natural causes,” ASP Ikoedem said.
However, the parents of the deceased twins, Mr. Jerry Sylvester and Mrs. Edwina Ezuruike Jerry, have disputed the results, stating they were not allowed to be represented during the autopsy as they would challenge the findings.
“We were not part of the autopsy and will reject it. If they refuse to allow us to bring our own pathologist for a second autopsy, we will contest the findings at the appropriate time,” they said.
It will be recalled that the incident allegedly occurred at Med-Vical Medical Centre, 44, Boundary Road, GRA, Benin City on July 18, 2025 and August 2, 2025.
The twin babies, reportedly born preterm on July 9, 2025, at another hospital, were referred to Med-Vical Medical Centre, 44, Boundary road, GRA, Benin City the same day for paediatric and neonatal intensive care.
The parents filed a petition with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, accusing the hospital of medical negligence, incompetence, and secrecy.
Following the petition, the Edo State Police Commissioner, CP Monday Agbonika, ordered an investigation into the deaths.
