Former Nigeria Senate President, Adolphus Wabara has strongly condemned the life imprisonment sentence handed to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, calling the judgment a painful blow to the entire Igbo nation.
Wabara reacted shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, delivered the ruling on Thursday.
According to him, the verdict was not just against Kanu but symbolically against the Igbo people as a whole.
It is not Kanu alone, but the entire Igbo race that they have imprisoned for life, Wabara said.
He expressed shock that, barely 24 hours earlier, a Boko Haram leader was sentenced to only five years in prison, while Kanu – whom he described as a non-violent activist – received a life sentence.
Kanu is not a terrorist. He is a freedom fighter advocating against injustice towards the Igbo people, he argued.
Wabara also insisted that the ruling would not be the final word on the matter, noting that the legal team would appeal the decision and seek justice at the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court.
He added that the law applied to the Igbo is not the same law applied to others. “The real terrorists are being rehabilitated and reintegrated, while peaceful IPOB members face harsh sentencing for their legitimate demands.”
