The Edo State government has reacted to claimed by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo-led government’s effort to float state airline in the state as a misplaced priority and further evidence of cretinous governance.

This was stated by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele and made available to newsmen today in Benin.

According Dr. Ebojele, “Governor Monday Okpebholo’s rationale for establishing Edo Air is rooted in a clear vision for economic growth, connectivity, and regional development. He recognizes that Edo State, with the strategic advantage of Oba Akenzua II Airport and its position as a commercial and cultural hub in the South-South, has the potential to become a major aviation center.

“By establishing a state-owned airline, Governor Okpebholo’s administration aims to improve intra-state and inter-state travel, boost tourism, facilitate trade, and attract investors, thereby creating new opportunities and jobs for Edo residents. While Edo Air will not be the first airline initiated by a state government in Nigeria, it will certainly be the first by an Edo Governor, marking a historic step in the state’s aviation and economic development.

“Beyond the economic argument, Governor Okpebholo frames Edo Air as the fulfillment of a campaign promise, emphasizing accountability and governance by action. By moving from rhetoric to implementation, the project demonstrates his commitment to translating electoral pledges into tangible benefits for the people of Edo.

“It reflects a leadership philosophy that sees infrastructure as a driver of prosperity and recognizes that a functional aviation system is essential for modernizing the state’s economy and expanding its national and regional influence. The airline is therefore as much a symbol of trust kept as it is an instrument of strategic development.

“In the midst of these constructive plans, the Governor also responds to the ongoing factional swipes from the opposition PDP, which have sought to trivialize and politicize his initiatives. He rejects these attacks as short-sighted and counterproductive, arguing that the focus should be on results rather than partisan rhetoric. Edo Air is not a political gimmick; it is a developmental project aimed at benefiting all Edo people.

“The Governor’s position underscores that governance must rise above petty politicking, and that true leadership is measured not by attacks on rivals, but by concrete action that improves the lives of citizens and secures the state’s long-term growth.”
