The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has seen a large influx of patients for its ongoing Cataract Screening and Subsidized Surgery Programme, organized by the Department of Ophthalmology.
The programme has been met with accolades for the UBTH CMD, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu.
In just three days, from March 4th to 6th, 2026, over 1,000 individuals have been screened for cataracts and other eye conditions.

Patients from across the South South States in Nigeria are participating in the programme, demonstrating the critical need for accessible eye care and the strong reputation of UBTH’s specialized services.
The programme includes free eye consultations and screenings.
Patients diagnosed with cataracts can undergo subsidized cataract surgery, covering essential medical needs. This initiative significantly improves access to vital eye care for numerous patients.
The Cataract Screening and Subsidized Surgery Programme is giving renewed hope under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led federal government and better lives to many patients with impaired vision.
