The National Population Commission (NPC) has debunked the claim on 2025 National Census contrary to viral social media reports attributed to its Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra that date has been fixed.

Dismissing the claim as false, the NPC said Kwarra was misrepresented. It described the reports as attempts to mislead the public and generate online traffic.

The NPC explained that the rumors stemmed from comments made by its chairman during the 30th Anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Abuja, where Kwarra expressed hope that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu might issue a proclamation for the census in 2024.

The Commission however insisted that he did not specify a timeline or make any formal announcement regarding the date, reiterating that setting the date for the census “is the exclusive responsibility of the President, who must issue an official proclamation”.

The NPC said it had been working closely with the presidency to determine a suitable timeline following the postponement of the exercise by the previous administration, adding, that preparations for the census were ongoing as the NPC remained focused on ensuring the success of the vital national exercise.

The Commission urged Nigerians to seek accurate updates only from its official channels and avoid relying on unverified information. It also appealed to the media and the public to verify reports before sharing them, warning that the spread of false narratives could create unnecessary confusion.

For reliable updates on the upcoming census, the NPC advised visiting its official website and following its verified social media platforms.
