The Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, today officially inaugurated the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, in a ceremony attended by esteemed dignitaries, academics, and political figures from across the state. 

Speaking at the event, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalising the university and addressing longstanding challenges.

He highlighted his government’s recent success in securing the induction of 126 medical graduates whose progress had been stalled since August 2024 due to unresolved institutional crises. 

According to him, “With our concerted efforts, we have been able to clear the backlog of medical students, ensuring 126 graduates finally receive their induction. This achievement demonstrates the transformative power of real commitment to change.”

Okpebholo urged the newly appointed Governing Council to approach their roles with dedication and a clear vision, emphasizing the need to restore AAU’s reputation and ensure academic excellence. 

Governor Okpebholo charged the governing council to serve with diligence and a deep sense of responsibility, stressing that it is the opportunity for the council to make a lasting impact in the university.

He reassured students and staff of the university of his administration’s unwavering support in creating an environment conducive to learning and growth. 

In his acceptance speech, the council chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, a former Vice Chairman (South-South) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Esema of Uromi Kingdom, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the council. He pledged to work towards a complete transformation of the institution. 

According to him, “There is no doubt that education is the foundation of Edo State’s future. The role that Ambrose Alli University plays in our development cannot be overstated. It is evident from the steps taken so far that the governor is truly committed to restoring the institution’s lost glory.”

Acknowledging political differences, Chief Orbih commended Governor Okpebholo’s comprehensive approach to governance, stating, “For many, I am first known as a politician, and not from the same political party as the governor. However, today’s event proves that, in the interest of education and progress, he has prioritised the welfare of AAU above political affiliations.” 

Other members of the council include Prof. Friday Okonofua; Prof. Steve Amiemenkharu; Hon. Lukman Muhammad; Prof. Idialu Jeremiah Uwaifo; Prof. Eric Kelly Inanemo Omogbai and Prof Omoruyi Ikponmwonsa Osahon

In an interview with newsmen, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, Prof. Sunday Olowo Samuel said “Today’s inauguration clears a better path to the growth of our dear University. We are confident that with the calibre of personality in the Governing Council, the university is on a progress-ever trajectory. “

With the new council in place, hopes are high that AAu, Ekpoma will experience a new era of stability and growth, ensuring a brighter future for students, staff, and the broader academic community.
