In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has reacted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent fall during an official visit to Turkey, stating that the incident should not be mocked but taken seriously because of its wider implications for Nigeria.
He wrote, ”I find nothing funny about a tottering old man, and I do hope that he is fine. But I am alarmed that the future of this dying country, has been left in the hands of a man as demonstrably incapacitated as the old codger in Turkey. It is not well.”
In his post, Farotimi said there was nothing funny about watching an elderly man struggle physically, he explained that his first reaction was concern for the president’s health.
He said he sincerely hoped that Tinubu was fine and had not suffered any serious injury, however, Farotimi said the incident also raised serious questions about leadership.
He noted that Nigeria is currently going through a difficult period. He said the country is facing economic hardship, insecurity, and growing public frustration, according to him, this is a time when Nigeria needs strong and active leadership.
President Tinubu reportedly slipped while attending an event in Turkey, videos of the moment later appeared online, the incident quickly became a topic of discussion on social media, with Nigerians sharing mixed reactions.
Farotimi said his concern went beyond the fall itself, he argued that the incident highlighted worries about the president’s physical capacity to handle the demands of office and described the situation as troubling, especially given the fragile state of the country.
The lawyer said Nigeria’s future should not be left in uncertain hands, he warned that leadership weakness at the top could worsen the nation’s problems and added that Nigerians deserve confidence in their leader’s ability to govern effectively.
