There are insinuations that the management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma may be heading for a coalition with the university’s Governing Council and by extension the Visitor, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Unconfirmed reports from the institution indicate that the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eunice Omonzejie who was appointed on the 22nd of September, 2025, came prepared for a battle royal with everyone and everything that may appear equal or superior in authority to her office.
The daring Vice-Chancellor went straight for the jugular of the Governing Council by withholding their statutory entitled allowances for months and withdrawing the vehicles allocated for conveying Council members to and fro Ekpoma for their statutory meetings.
It was also gathered that Madam Vice-Chancellor also relocated the council members from their previous hotel to a less befitting one where they were not entitled to even table water. It was reported that she had said Council members are not adding any value to the university and as such should be dispensed off with.
It was also reliably gathered that the Vice-Chancellor severally propelled the staff unions to protest some Council decisions which were perceived not acceptable to her. A case at hand was the Council approved appointment of a University Bursar and Internal Auditor, a matter she had encouraged the unions to present to the Visitor in one of their meetings with the governor.
It was further learnt that the Governor told her that there is a formidable Governing Council in the university who can handle such matters.
At the last Governing Council meeting, the matter came up and it was resolved as indicated in the letter to the Joint Action Committee of the University Unions signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council.
The letter, dated 21st March 2026 expressly stated that the said appointment and others were the statutory perogative of the council and as such, the matter has been finally laid to rest.
The council’s stand was said to have rattled the Vice Chancellor who felt that a grand plan for an industrial disharmony between the workers and the council is well laid with a view to leading to the desolution of the council.
Sources close to the unions said madam’s several meetings with us officially and privately was geared towards getting rid of the council so that she would not have superior authority just the same way she trashed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) thus making her a sole administrator of the University as she always claims that she enjoys the support of the Governor after making a relative of the Governor her deputy.
Members of staff of the University were seen discussing in whisper tones the six months old administration of Madam Vice-Chancellor as counter productive to the governor’s dream of a university.
All attempts to get official reactions from the office of the Public Relations officer proved abortive as his official line could not be reached.
