The Edo State Government on Monday restated its firm and uncompromising ban on cultism and all cult-related activities across the state, and warns individuals and groups who may seek to exploit the ongoing primary election season as cover for violence, intimidation, or any form of criminal conduct associated with secret cults to desist from such acts.
In a press statement by Dr. Patrick Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Monday Okpebholo and made available to newsmen in Benin, disclosed that the government is aware of rising concerns over the potential for politically motivated cult activity during the primary election period, and hereby reaffirms that no individual, group, or political interest will be permitted to use the democratic process as a shield for lawlessness.
The statement read:
“The ban on cultism in Edo State is total, absolute, and non-negotiable. Any person – regardless of political affiliation, social standing, or group loyalty – found engaging in cult activities or fomenting electoral violence under the guise of any cult group whatsoever will face the full wrath of the law. There will be no exceptions and no sacred cows.
“It is on record that the administration has consistently maintained that the security of Edo citizens and the integrity of democratic processes are among its highest obligations. The government’s SHINE Agenda – anchored on security as its foundational pillar – places the protection of lives, property, and civic rights at the very core of governance in Edo State.
“Law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and all relevant security formations operating within Edo State, have been placed on heightened alert and directed to respond swiftly and decisively to any report of cult activity, electoral intimidation, or violence in any of the three senatorial districts.
“The government further warns that the primary election period will be actively monitored, and that any attempt to weaponise cult networks against political opponents, communities, or innocent citizens will be treated as a criminal act and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“Citizens are strongly encouraged to report suspicious activities, threats, or incidents of electoral violence to the nearest security agency or through available state government emergency channels. Informants and whistle-blowers will be protected.
“Edo State belongs to all its people. The government will not allow the sacrifices of democracy to be undermined by criminal elements hiding behind cult flags. Edo will remain peaceful, and its elections will be free, fair, and safe for every citizen.
“It is on this note that the Edo State Government calls on political parties, candidates, party delegates, community and traditional leaders, youth groups, and all stakeholders to actively promote a culture of peaceful participation and firmly reject any association with cultism or electoral violence in all its forms.”
