A final decision has reportedly been reached by the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on who will fly the party’s ticket for the Edo Central Senatorial seat comes 2027.
After extensive deliberations, a source close to the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, confirmed that Hon. John Yakubu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy Governorship candidate in 2016, has been chosen as the party’s candidate.
The Edo Central Senatorial contest is now shaping up as a two-horse race between the incumbent Senator Joe Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Hon. John Yakubu of the NDC. Political observers note that while other aspirants may join the race, the real contest lies between these two heavyweights.
The Contenders: Strengths and Weaknesses
Senator Joe Ikpea goes into the race with the advantage of incumbency and the backing of the ruling party the State. He also hails from the same senatorial district as Governor Monday Okpebholo, a factor that could aid political alignment and access to state structures. Ikpea is equally seen as having the financial muscle to prosecute a robust campaign.
However, opinions on his performance are divided. While some constituents argue he has done well within his short time in the Senate, others insist his legislative impact and oversight functions have been underwhelming.
On the other side is Hon. John Yakubu, often described by supporters as the “Peter Obi of Edo Central” because of his grassroots appeal. Many still regard him as the best Local Government Chairman Edo Central has produced since the return of democracy in 1999.
With the presidential and National Assembly elections holding on the same day, analysts believe the “Peter Obi wave” could boost his chances if it resurfaces. Yet, the recurring reality of Nigerian politics remains: goodwill alone rarely wins elections. Money plays a decisive role, and Yakubu’s comparatively leaner financial war chest against Ikpea’s deep pocket could prove a major hurdle.
Voters Hold the Ace:
Ultimately, the decision rests with the people of Edo Central Senatorial District. They will decide who goes to Abuja to represent them in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.
One thing appears certain: the next Senator from Edo Central will likely be either Senator Joe Ikpea or Hon. John Yakubu.
