UBTH Hails Ahonaruogho’s Family Donation of a State of the Art Geriatrics Library and Lounge

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ahonaruogho Family for their generous donation of a state-of-the-art library and lounge facility dedicated to the Geriatrics Ward, named in honor of Pa. Jeremiah Olu Oma Ahonaruogho of blessed memory.

Speaking during the commissioning of the library and lounge, Prof. Ize-Iyamu highlighted the significance of the contribution, stating that it represents more than just a physical space.

The CMD added that the donation embodies the institution’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older persons, just as she emphasized that caring for the elderly extends beyond medical treatment to include an environment that fosters comfort, dignity, relaxation, social interaction, and meaningful engagement.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu reiterated UBTH’s deep appreciation for the Ahonaruogho Family’s support, which she noted will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on the lives of the elderly patients.

While urging well-meaning individuals to emulate the Ahonaruogho Family, led by Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho (SAN), Prof. Ize-Iyamu added that,” We have put in place opportunities for other well meaning individuals to build a legacy of healing by adopting a ward/ facility; an initiative that will encourage you to partner with us to transform healthcare one facility at a time. Please join us to make it happen.”

She said the UBTH community was full of gratitude, honour, and reflection adding that, “We are gathered here not merely to unveil a facility, but to celebrate a life defined by values that inspire us: integrity, excellence, discipline, and service.

“The Geriatrics Library and Lounge provides a welcoming setting where elderly patients can experience moments of connection, companionship, and wellbeing as part of their healthcare journey. It represents a more compassionate approach to care – one that recognises every patient as a person deserving of respect and attention.”Prof. Ize-Iyamu said.

In his speech during the commissioning of the Geriatrics Library and Lounge, Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho (SAN) expressed gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the hospital to their late father, prompting the family’s decision to give back.

The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including Madam Josephine Ahonaruogho and Mrs. Mojisola Ahonaruogho, the mother and wife of Prince Ahonaruogho, as well as Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Chairman of the UNIBEN Trust Development Fund, and Prof. Eddy Erhagbe, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.

Other attendees included Prof. Afekhide Omoti, President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the NMA Edo State Branch, Prof. Roli Madubuko from the Department of Internal Medicine at UBTH, former UNIBEN Alumni Association President Prof. Alfred Ehigiegba, Dr. Jude Osagie, C.E.O. of Precious Palm Royal Hotel (PPRH) and Emmanuel Oriazuwa Esq. among others.

The new facility is expected to benefit both the staff and patients, promoting improved health outcomes for the geriatric population.
