On September 11, 2026, Nigeria pauses to mark a rare milestone in national life: the 92nd birthday of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, CFR, CON, The Esama of Benin Kingdom.
It is more than a birthday.
It is the commemoration of a man who did not merely live through Nigeria’s history, but one through whom the history of a nation was rerouted.
“There are men who live within history, and there are men through whom history passes,” wrote Dr. Pedro Obaseki in his tribute.
“Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion belongs unmistakably to the second and rarer order. Nigeria did not merely contain him; Nigeria was rerouted by him, the way a great rock in a river does not stop the water but teaches it a new geography.”
FROM OKADA TO THE NATION’S CONSCIOUSNESS
Chief Igbinedion was born on the Eleventh of September, 1934, in Okada, then an obscure clearing of farmers in what is now Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
“There were no drums in the palace that morning, no prophecy on the wind,” Dr. Obaseki noted.
“Ninety-two years later that village name is spoken every day, in every market and motor park from Sokoto to Sapele, by millions who have never set foot in Edo State.”
That transformation of a village name into a national reference point speaks to the scale of Igbinedion’s footprint.
From transportation to education, media to philanthropy, his ventures created jobs, institutions, and pathways where none existed.
A LEGACY QUARRIED, NOT GIVEN
Dr. Obaseki argues that the Esama’s greatness was not accidental.
“Greatness is not rain. It is quarried,” he wrote.
“It is cut from the mountain of discipline, risk, vision, and an almost stubborn faith in what a Black man can build with his own hands.”
Over nine decades, Chief Igbinedion built a reputation as a quintessential entrepreneur and traditional statesman.
As the Esama of Benin Kingdom, he has served as a bridge between the ancient Benin monarchy and modern Nigeria, advising governments, hosting leaders, and deploying his resources to community development.
His honors — Commander of the Federal Republic, CFR, and Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON — reflect a life of service recognized at the highest levels of the Nigerian state.
WHEN A MAN BECOMES AN AGE
To say a man has “become an age” is to say his name now measures time.
For many Nigerians, pre-Igbinedion and post-Igbinedion are distinct eras in private enterprise, in the democratization of air travel, and in the belief that indigenous capital could build world-class institutions.
At 92, Chief Igbinedion stands as a living archive: of Nigeria’s independence era optimism, of the oil boom and bust, of military and civilian governments, and of the resilience required to build and sustain legacy in a turbulent nation.
Dr. Obaseki concludes that what the Esama achieved cannot be bought.
“That is not fame. Fame is loud and forgetful.
That is a man entering the language itself — and no man buys that with money.”
A NATIONAL TRIBUTE
Across Edo State and beyond, tributes have poured in from traditional rulers, political leaders, captains of industry, and ordinary citizens whose lives have been touched by his schools, airlines, newspapers, and charitable works.
