The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the health and well-being of adolescents, with a series of activities lined up to mark the 2026 International Adolescent Health Week.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole stated this in a speech read on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary (PS), Dr. Paul Eighemhenrio, during a press briefing in Benin.
Dr. Oshiomhole stated that adolescence is a critical stage of physical, emotional and social development, requiring collective efforts from government, families, schools, communities and healthcare providers to address the health challenges facing young people.
The Executive Director of UNAPSA, Dr. Bridget Okoeguale, expressed delight that Edo State recognises the importance of adolescent health and has keyed into the initiative, noting that adolescence is a unique stage that requires proper care and attention.
In her remarks, Dr. Izehiuwa Enato said she was glad that stakeholders had come together to address adolescent health, noting that adolescents are often forgotten.
She disclosed that a school health outreach would be held from October 14 to 16 to screen and examine students, counsel them to open up about their challenges, and provide interventions to address their needs, alongside other activities lined up for the week.
Also speaking, the Supervisor for Education in Oredo Local Government Council, Weyimi Omorogiuwa, said the week was aimed at reaching out to adolescents, reassuring them that they are not alone and building their confidence.
The week, which runs from October 12 to 18, has the theme: “Nothing About Us Without Us: Power, Voice and Health Equity for All Adolescents.”
Activities include a press briefing and courtesy visit, training of local government area AFP, radio and television discussions, school outreach, and a seminar and panel session.
