The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria on Friday inducted 54 Nurses who are graduates from the Department of Nursing Science of Edo State University Uzairue, Edo State.

Administering the oath taking/induction, Director of Special Duties, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Mr. Yahaya Summi, representing the Registrar General of the Council, congratulated the students for the successful completion of their degree program and also passing the professional examinations, saying it is a great achievement and the council is proud of them.

He also expressed appreciations to the school management and lecturers of the Nursing Department for their commitment, support and contributions both academically, morally and financially towards victorious accomplishment of their education in the university.

“I want to also congratulate the Administrative Department of the Nursing Sciences of this great university for nurturing and grooming you both in character and learning”.

He said the extent of the occasion was to celebrate your transition from being nursing students to graduate and registered nurses, adding that the gathering is to formerly receive you into the noble profession of nursing through oath taking and induction.

He further stated that the occasion was to also trying to remind them of their fundamental responsibility as nurses, saying that it is only after the induction that their names would be enter into the council’s register and thereafter would be addressed with the title registered nurses.

Going further, Mr. Summi said that a lot is being expected from them as prospective nurses, adding that nursing is a profession that is tremendously demanding compassion and helpfulness meaning that nurses are required to be compassionate, kind and attentive in dealing with old patients and clients.

“The BSc programs as you are all aware is high standard of education programs designed to produce nurses who are adequately equipped with the requisite knowledge, clinical skills and professional intelligence to render safe and efficient health care to the populace”.

According to him, the program is also both academics and professional in nature designed to improve the quality of nursing services in Nigeria by empowering nurses to make sound nursing diagnosis, design appropriate nursing care life line implement and evaluate comprehensively.

“As a prospective graduate nurses, you have attained high standard of education in clinical skills that will enable you to render safe and efficient health care services as you go into the labour market; you will be fully accountable for your own decisions, actions and attitudes, you must be able to perform nursing skills verities of health care settings.”

The director however encouraged them to learn and work with other nurses who are already in health practice by accepting corrections, improve and make adjustments positively when necessary and avoid unnecessary mistakes.

He further encouraged them to use the available opportunity to acquire higher degrees in nursing as he appealed to them to be credible ambassadors, adhered to the ethics of the profession by display honesty and humility in the course of their practice at all times.

According to him, Nigeria is faced with very serious challenge of migration of health professionals adding that WHO encouraged migration of health professionals and appealed to them as some of them may desire to leave the country, they should be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor said the oath taking/induction is the 2nd qualified graduate nursing students of the institution.

Aluyor said the institution had groomed and equip them to effectively take up the challenges in the nursing profession.

“Edo University Uzairue prides itself as a modern university that develops leaders, as nursing graduates from the university, we as management are confident of the fact that the knowledge you have received will act as catalyst needed to succeed in life.

“As graduate nurses,  yours is a call to service. Your mandate to all patients include medication, treatment administration, patient education and case management.

“You will be required to offer these services as they are crucial to saving lives.

“It is my charge to you that as you go out to render this services, do so with every sense of pride and the defense of your Almamata,” he said.

The VC disclosed that the university is proud to have modern simulation equipment such as the Simman 3G Manikin and different low fidelity and high fidelity Manikins deployed in the training of nursing students.

He added that the university is the first university in West Africa to procure the Anatomage table in the teaching of Anatomy, saying that an Anatomage table is the most advanced digital tool in the teaching of Anatomy in the medical sciences.

He congratulated the newly graduating nursing students and wish them successful career ahead.

The chairperson of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Edo State chapter, Mrs. Elizabeth Jugo said the new graduates are now certified nurses and are qualified to work in any health facilities in the country.

“I urge you to adhere to the rules of professional conduct which are set of ethical guidelines binding on every nurse in Nigeria,” she said.

“Earlier in her welcome address, the Head of Department, Nursing Science, Dr. Nwamaka Kanikwu said the inductees are the second set of nurses produced by the University with BSc Nursing having spent five years in the institution.

Kanikwu said nursing profession is a unique one that adds value to patients care, impact patients well-being and preserve patients right.

“Today, we are marking the admission of the newly qualified graduate nurses into this ancient and noble profession of nursing.

“A profession whose members are largely known with the three major attributes of empathy, patience and compassion.

“I rejoice with the inductees for attaining this enviable height in both educational and professional career, thereby becoming members of the nursing profession in Nigeria,” she said.

The induction lecture title: “The Competent Nurse: Adding Value To Patient Care Through Best Practices”, was delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) Roselynd Ejakhanghe Esewe, from the university of Benin.

High point of the event was the oath taking/induction and presentation of award to the two best graduating nu and urged them to take every aspect of the ceremony very serious as it mark the beginning of their job career as nurses.
