CBN Issues Fresh Directives To Banks 2 Days To Deadline

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a new statement ahead of the February 10 deadline for the usage of the old notes.
A new message has been sent to all banks in the country regarding an account allegedly owned by Abdul Rehman Makki, a suspected terrorist leader.
According to a fresh message, the CBN made it clear that it is not in support of any illegal activities as those who wish to take such steps can take their acts to another place or another region because once they are identified, they would be arrested and prosecuted according to the principles of the law.
The governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele ordered banks in the country to trace all the account numbers in their care to the name Abdul Rehman Makki and also prevent any form of the transaction from the account to another account or from another account to the said name in other to prevent terrorism financing in the country which might lead to insecurity and great fear and destruction.
According to a report, the CBN has issued a fresh message to all the banks in the country regarding what they must do in the coming days over suspected terrorists whereas said to be financing deadly groups to carry out evil acts.
The CBN wrote, “Under Paragraphs 2 and 4 of Resolution 2368 (2017) had on January 16, 2023, listed Abdul Rehman Makki as being associated with ISIL or AlQaida and has accordingly been added to the ISIL (Da’ esh) & AlQaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities that are subject to assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo as set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021). “
“Further to the requirements of the provisions of Section 6 of the CBN AML/CFT Regulations, 2022 and Section 4.3 of the CBN Guidelines on Targeted Financial Sanctions Related to Terrorism and Terrorism Financing, 2022, all financial institutions are required to immediately: Screen their customer database for a business relationship with the designated individual and file a report to the NFIU.”
Further details revealed that an individual whose name was not revealed gave more information to the CBN and many other security agencies after he discovered the alleged plan of Abdul Rehman Makki, the suspected terrorist financer.
Meanwhile, the DSS or the police are yet to issue any statement regarding the identity and activities of Abdul Rehman Makki.
