Okoukoni made this known in a letter of withdrawal he personally signed and addressed to Barrister Julius Abure, Labour Party National Chairman and Kelly Ogbaloi,  Edo State Labour Party Chairman.

Okoukoni said the “Pay As You Go” style of engagement of the party must not be the basis for politics in Nigeria, adding that his “decision to withdraw at this period has everything to do with the style of the management of the Labour Party.”

The statement reads in part: “I wish to inform you of my intension to withdraw from the governorship race in Edo State.

“Mr. Chairman, my decision to withdraw at this period in time has everything to do with the style of the management of our party. Indeed, we still have much to do regarding the approach and decision making of our great party.

“The “Pay as you go” style of engagement must not be the basis for every politics in Nigeria, hence as a man with desire for transformational leadership, it is important to move aside until we are able to produce leadership with vision and mission for our great party,” Okoukoni said.
