By Our REPORTER
The non remittance of the various deductable and deductions from council workers salaries into such schemes as the National Housing Fund, Union dues, cooperative deductions among others was at the front burner at the just concluded 2-day Orientation Workshop for State And Branch Officers of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Edo State Chapter.
In his welcome address, the President, NULGE Edo State Chapter, Comrade Lazarus Adorolor said the workshop could not have come at any other time than now, when council workers’ welfare demands more attention as administrators at various levels seem to be more determined, than before, to exploit the workers.
Comrade Adorolor told participants to take advantage of the workshop to broaden their skills and be rededicated to the struggle to librate the workers.
Resource persons for the workshop who include Former National President, NULGE, Dr. Deji Akinwalere, Former President, NULGE Edo State, Kaduna Eboigbodin, Media Chieftain, Tony Abolo among others were unanimous in their presentations that local government workers deserve more than it currently get.
It was agreed that the 1% allocation training fund for Council workers is no longer visible, considering the national inflation rate, thus calling for an upward review of this with a Stern warning that “NULGE and council workers will no longer condone a diversion of this fund for any other purpose other than training of local government council workers”.
The workshop also called on Government to “fastrack the resolution of issues that has delayed the commencement of and implementation of the contributory pension scheme for Council workers in Edo State”. While calling for “a drastic reduction in the cost of governance with a view to enhance regular payment of salaries at the council level” Government and management were admonished to also pay attention to laws and regulations that promotes workers fundamental rights and benefits rather than pay most attention on punitive regulations at all time.
Declaring the workshop open, the chairman, Edo State Local Government Service Commission, represented by Hon. Andrew Egbadon appreciated NULGE for a proper handling of industrial relationship with the councils said the Commission will always partner with NULGE for improved services to the people.
