UBA Announces Transformative Change To Its USSD Banking Services

By The9jaTREND
In a move aligned with the evolving dynamics of the USSD ecosystem, the United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced that effective today, June 27, 2025, the bank will no longer deduct service charges from customers’ bank accounts. Instead, these fees will now be seamlessly withdrawn from users’ mobile airtime balances.
A message to customers from the bank said under the new billing framework, each USSD session would incur a charge of ₦6.98 for up to 120 seconds, managed directly by customers’ mobile network operators.
To ensure transparency, UBA said it has implemented a consent prompt at the start of each session, allowing customers to approve the deduction before it occurs, contingent on the bank’s ability to deliver the service.
According to the bank, this shift reflected UBA’s strategic response to industry changes while maintaining its commitment to accessible and secure banking.
“Customers who prefer not to adopt the new airtime-based model can opt out of USSD banking and explore alternative digital channels, including the UBA Mobile App, the AI-powered Leo platform, and the bank’s robust internet banking portal.
“We are dedicated to delivering innovative, customer-focused solutions,” a UBA spokesperson stated. “This transition ensures continued convenience while adapting to the evolving USSD landscape,” it said
