The fire brigade/fire fighters, no doubt, must have advised and warned you about the risks of fire hazard; what you should do in the sad event of fire outbreak. Please listen to them and follow their instructions to save your life, the lives of others, yours and their properties. They risk their lives for your safety, for the nation and humanity. The intention of this article is to compliment their efforts.
- Escape Route: Plan/know your escape route on advance, especially if you are living in a tower or storey building with many flats. Always keep it clear. Tell anyone else in your flat, house, and premises about the escape route. In the case of children, demonstrate to them what they should do in the case of fire outbreaks. You might have to get out in dark and smokey conditions. It will be much easier if you plan and study your escape route earlier.
- Warn Others: If the fire outbreak is in your house or anywhere else, make sure you tell everyone immediately. Get out quickly. Close the door behind you to help reduce the spread. Raise an alarm and call fire brigade. If you live in a tower or storey building, use the stairs. DO NOT USE THE LIFT. If you live in a flat above the ground floor, shout from the window to attract attention; also tell them to call Fire Brigade.
- Get out quickly. Do not try to pack up valuables or possessions. Your life is precious and more important.
- If you are a smoker, take precautions. Make sure that you always put out the stumps(remains) of your cigarette properly. Don’t drop it on the floor. Get a saucer or any other suitable container.

If you have to use them, always have a proper candle holder, and make sure it fits firmly inside, allowing some space around it. Never leave candles unattended or go to sleep when they are alight. Use a candle snuffer or a metal spoon to put them out and let them cool down.
- Washing Machine: Never leave it unattended when in use.
- Electrical Equipments: Always use electrical appliances with care and as directed by the producer/maker. Occasional checks by experts are advised.
