Former Senator who represented Kogi West Senatorial District of Kogi State in the 8th and 9th Chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, has shared his views on Nigeria’s borrowing profile, raising concerns about the country’s fiscal direction in recent years.
Melaye made the remarks on his X handle on Thursday, March 26, 2026, where he reflected on government borrowing under successive administrations.
His comments focused on comparing borrowing figures during the tenure of late former President Muhammadu Buhari and the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Buhari with subsidy borrowed 83 trillion in 8 years while Tinubu without subsidy borrowed 158 Trillion in 3 years. We have become a chattered borrowing nation. Where is the borrowed money please?.”
According to him, the scale of borrowing has increased significantly over time, prompting questions about how such funds are being utilized.
He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in public finance, noting that citizens are often interested in understanding how borrowed funds contribute to national development
