Armed bandits has invaded Government Secondary School, Iluke-Bunu, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the state.
During the attack, a vice principal of the school, Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, was shot and killed. Two other residents also lost their lives, including a 70-year-old man and a six-year-old child.
According to reports, dozens of gunmen riding on motorcycles invaded the community and headed towards the school in what appeared to be an attempt to abduct students writing their exams.
The attack sparked panic across the community as students, teachers, and residents fled for safety.
Security operatives, including the military, police, and local vigilantes, responded swiftly and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat into nearby bushes.
Authorities say the rapid intervention prevented what could have been a large-scale abduction of students sitting for the WASSCE examination.
The Kogi State Government has condemned the attack and assured residents that security agencies are working to apprehend the perpetrators and strengthen security around schools and communities.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of students and educational institutions amid the growing insecurity affecting parts of Nigeria.
