The Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, a Socio-Cultural Defenders of the Rich Culture, Traditions Customs and Heritage of the Edo Nation has called on all residents of Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State and non-indigenes alike, to avoid actions or rhetoric capable of stoking tension urging for peaceful coexistence and respect for the rights of host communities must remain paramount.
This was stated in a Press Statement jointly singed by the Movement’s President, General Secretary and Diaspora Coordinator, Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture, Mr. Osayuki-Osa and Mr. Monday Ohuimumwen JP respectively in a press statement made available to The9jaTREND in Benin City, the state capital.
The statement read:
“Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide has noted the recent call by some Ijaw groups residing in Edo State, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), to embark on immediate ward delineation in Ovia and Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituencies.
“While we recognize the right of every group to make representations to INEC, we wish to state that ward delineation is a constitutional and electoral process that must reflect historical realities, demographic data, and the interests of the indigenous host communities. In Edo South, the Benin people are the recognized indigenous owners of the land.
“Ward delineation cannot be driven by sectional interests or demands that do not align with constitutional provisions and the principle of fairness to host communities. We therefore urge INEC, the Federal Government, Edo State Government, Honourable Member representing Ovia Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, and all relevant authorities to ensure that any process of delineation in Edo South is guided strictly by the Constitution, existing electoral laws, and wide consultation with indigenous Benin stakeholders.
“We call on all residents of Edo South, indigenes and non-indigenes alike, to avoid actions or rhetoric capable of stoking tension. Peaceful coexistence and respect for the rights of host communities must remain paramount.
“AIGUOBASINMWIN MOVEMENT WORLD-WIDE remains committed to the unity, peace, and equitable development of Edo State.”
