The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Edo State Branch has congratulated the Chief Medical Director (CMD)of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, along with the entire UBTH Management, on the successful commissioning of the new Geriatric Library and Lounge.
The commendation is contained in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Benin and signed by Dr. Eustace Oseghale and Dr. Iluobe Inegbenosun, the Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
Dr. Oseghale highlighted that the landmark facility, generously donated by Chief Richard Oma Ahonaruogho SAN, represents a crucial advancement in geriatric care.
He praised Chief Ahonaruogho for his philanthropic efforts and unwavering dedication to enhancing the health and dignity of the elderly in Edo State, noting that such private-sector investments serve as a model for others to follow.
The Edo NMA described the library project as laudable and “a dedicated space for learning, rest, social interaction, and psychosocial support for our elderly patients and their caregivers.
“We also applaud Prof. Ize-Iyamu for her visionary leadership and the UBTH management for prioritizing specialized care for an ageing population. The Geriatric Library and Lounge aligns with global best practices in healthy ageing and reinforces UBTH’s position as a foremost teaching hospital in Nigeria.
“With Nigeria’s elderly population growing, facilities like this are critical to safeguarding their mental well-being, improving health literacy, and enhancing clinical outcomes. Access to a conducive environment and relevant resources will ensure our senior citizens receive care that is both compassionate and dignified.
“The Edo NMA reaffirms its commitment to supporting initiatives, partnerships, and policies that advance clinical practice, enhance healthcare delivery, and improve the quality of life for all patients in Edo State.” Dr. Oseghale said.
