The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, led management and health sector stakeholders on a facility tour on Tuesday to demonstrate her administration’s dedication to accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare.
Speaking during the tour of over 12 projects initiated by her administration, the CMD emphasized their critical role in achieving superior healthcare outcomes.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu noted that while the hospital has existed for over 50 years, many of its structures and facilities have fallen into deplorable conditions, making infrastructural upgrades essential.
The facility tour had in attendance the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom mni, represented by the Medical Director of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Benin, Dr. Philip Ugbodaga, who performed the unveiling of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), among other projects.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare commended Prof. Ize-Iyamu for her visionary leadership and commitment to advancing quality healthcare in Nigeria.
Among the recently unveiled facilities stand a modern police post, an expanded Accident and Emergency waiting area, a sophisticated mortuary complex, a Multi-Faith Centre, and a specialized Renal Premium Ward.
Further elevating the institution’s operational scope are a newly established gas plant, a geriatric library and lounge, a state-of-the-art 160-slice CT scan facility housed within radiology, and a dedicated Special Investigation Unit.
This comprehensive wave of development is rounded out by a contemporary dentistry complex, an advanced oncology center, and an adjacent pantry linked to the main operating theater—collectively establishing a new benchmark for medical excellence.
