UBTH Discharges Mother, Newborn Baby After 21 Days Over Indebtedness

After the hue and cry over his inability to offset the medical bills of his wife and new born baby been detained at University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Distraught father of one an indigene of Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area, Mr. Umoru Imokha Abdulahi on Thursday thanked the media and well meaning Nigerians for their swift intervention, leading to the UBTH management granting his wife and baby discharge home without any additional burden or cost on him, after the earlier N200,000 deposit.

The young father especially thanked the media for the reportage that drew public attention to his ordeal at the hospital and Nigerians in particular.

Umoru had on Tuesday appealed to kind hearted Nigerians and Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo to help him in the discharge of his wife and new born baby detained at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), following his inability to offset the medical bills arising from a Ceasearian Section (CS).

The young father, who cried for help following the detainsion of his “Mrs Happiness Peter,” by the UBTH after he was unable to pay his medical bills has taken his wife and new born baby girl home after 21days in the hospital ward.

He cried out to Nigerians for help when his medical bills skyrocketed to over N530,000, lamemting that his wife, who put to bed through CS on March 20th, 2025, and their new born baby are been detained at UBTH over his inability to offset the bill.

Recall that the young man’s wife put to bed through CS on March 20th, 2025, and was discharged on March 27th, a week after, with a total bill of N380,000, but could not pay his bills due to his poor financial status.

According to him, he paid a deposit of N50,000 before admission and another N150,000, after delivery through CS, making a total of N200,000 out of the total bill of N380,000.

He noted that while he went seeking help to offset the earlier bill, an additional N150,000 was accrued, thereby forcing him to cry for help from kind hearted Nigerians and government.
