By Simeon OSAJIE
Ahead of 2023 general election, the Edo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ,(NUJ), Comrade Festus Alenkhe has called on Journalists in the State to adhere strictly to the ethics of the Journalism profession as they go about reporting political stories.
Alenkhe made this known through a media statement signed and made available to journalists in the state.
According to him, “journalists must remain apolitical in the course of marketing party candidates ahead of the election despite their personal political interest”.
Comrade Alenkhe stressed that as journalists, adherence to the ethics of the profession remain a top priority as any member of the union in the state found deeply making his political interest public would be made to face the Ethics /Disciplinary Committee of the council.
He said that members of the disciplinary committee would be on ground to monitor the activities of journalists who would want to defy the union’s constitution on neutrality in political news gathering.
“Journalists must cross check their stories before putting it out for public consumption while shunning being used by politicians to report libelous and scandalous news reports about any candidate,” he added.
