Police Probes Attack On Edo Party Stalwart
By Our REPORTER
The police in Edo State are investigating the attack on a stalwart of the All Progressive Party (APC) in the state, Comrade Victor Ovbieko who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on his life.
Ovbieko, is a member of the Governor Godwin Obaseki’s faction of the APC which decamped to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), prior to the 2020 governorship election in the state.
Since the political move which altered the political equation in Edo State, Ovbieko and some of his political allies were under pressure to return to the APC or face the consequences of their action.
“There were clandestine meetings and telephone calls where he was threatened for joining the PDP”, the PDP ward leader in Egor, Sunny Afese told journalists at the party secretariat in Benin City yesterday.
He revealed the party stalwart was attacked along Adolor Street, Benin City on June 20, 2020 by persons suspected to be hired thugs but was lucky to have been rescued by some good Samaritans after he was badly beaten.
Afese alleged that the incident was reported to the police but no arrest was made.
“We thought that the politics of bitterness was over after the conclusion of the governorship election, but here we are again as some thugs invaded his house on Alaka Street, Benin City on the night of December 3, 2021.
“Victor, his wife and his three kids, including his elder sister were at home when the attackers came. He alerted his wife and kids to escape through the back door for safety. He and his elder sister were however caught by the attackers as they tried to escape through the back door after he made sure that his wife and children have fled into safety. They were caught, beaten and stabbed.
“Thinking that he was dead, the attackers fled the scene in a hurry. Victor and his sister were later taken to the hospital by their next door neighbour. Unfortunately, his elder sister died as a result of the injuries inflicted on her”, Afese disclosed, urging the police to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring those behind it to book.
