BREAKING: Why Supreme Court Nullified Judgment Recognising Abure As LP National Chairman

By Simeon OSAJIE
The Supreme Court has set aside the judgment of the court of appeal in Abuja which recognized Barr. Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a verdict delivered today, a five-member panel of the apex court unanimously held that the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to have affirmed Abure as the National Chairman of the LP since the substance of the case was about the party’s leadership.
It held that the issues of leadership was n internal affair of a party over which courts lack jurisdiction.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court noted that the appeal filed by Senator Esther Usman and another was allowed, having been found to be meritorious.
The court also observed that, based on the submissions before it, Abure’s tenure had already expired. Consequently, it dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the Labour Party.
