The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Edo State Branch has declared that the ongoing strike action by doctors in the state will continue due to the unacceptable insecurity situation in the state.

The Edo NMA expressed strong disapproval of the prevailing insecurity, emphasizing that services will remain suspended until the safe release of their member abducted in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the State.

In a joint statement, Edo NMA Chairman Dr. Eustace Oseghale and State Secretary Dr. Iluobe Inegbenosun called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to initiate a comprehensive restructuring of the state’s security framework.

Dr. Oseghale noted that the overhaul should prioritize the integration of local vigilante groups, coupled with rigorous monitoring and assessment mechanisms, to effectively combat the escalating insecurity throughout Edo State.

The Edo NMA leadership affirmed that the decision to extend the service withdrawal was reached during an extensive meeting with key stakeholders.

The association noted that the strike will continue indefinitely until their kidnapped colleague is freed unharmed.

“We insist that security of lives and property is paramount and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

“Our member, held by kidnappers in Auchi, Edo State, must be released unhurt. Until then, we’ll continue our service withdrawal,” Oseghale said.

Dr. Oseghale noted that the NMA continuation of service withdrawal is paramount until security in the state improves.

He also frowned at the intimidation of doctors in the state, saying such will escalate the dispute, calling for security overhaul in Edo state.

The doctors urged the state government to, as a matter of urgency, demonstrate commitment to ensuring the safety of life and property in Edo State noting that Private practitioners may join the strike if there’s no speedy resolution.
