The arrests were made during intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and 14, 2026, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.

Three other suspects reportedly escaped during the operations with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

According to security sources, the arrests represent a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the abduction, which triggered concerns about the safety of corps members and other travellers using major highways in southeastern Nigeria.

Security agencies had reportedly maintained a manhunt for the suspected kidnappers since the incident, with intelligence gathering and coordinated operations eventually leading to the arrests.

The incident occurred on October 1, Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, when armed men reportedly intercepted and abducted 20 NYSC members travelling along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway.

The corps members were on their way to their designated orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when they were seized by the attackers.

The abduction raised fresh questions about the security of major roads in the region, particularly for young Nigerians travelling to participate in the national service programme.

The incident also highlighted the risks faced by travellers on highways where armed criminal groups can carry out attacks and escape before security operatives arrive.

The 20 corps members were rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State.

Their rescue came six days after the abduction and marked a major development in the efforts to secure their release and apprehend those responsible.

However, the subsequent arrests suggest that security agencies have continued investigating the incident beyond the recovery of the victims, with the aim of identifying and prosecuting the suspected perpetrators.

A security source described the latest arrests as a welcome development, noting that security operatives had worked to track down the alleged kidnappers since the abduction.

“This is a huge sigh of relief,” the source said, expressing hope that the suspects would face prosecution and that the victims would obtain justice.

The source added that the arrests could help advance efforts to hold those allegedly involved in the crime accountable.

Security agencies are expected to continue investigating the case to establish the individual roles of the five arrested suspects and determine whether other members of the alleged criminal gang were involved.

Authorities are also expected to intensify efforts to locate the three suspects who reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries, alongside other suspected members who remain at large.

The arrests could provide investigators with additional leads on the gang’s operations, movements and possible links to other criminal activities, although no further details about the suspects or their alleged roles have been made public in the report.
